The Research Ensemble - Alex South

Alex studied natural sciences at Cambridge University before joining the postgraduate performance course at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Whilst at the RSAMD he was taught clarinet by John Cushing, performed the Ellerby concerto, played in the Academy Now! and Summerfest concert series, and was selected to join the RSNO apprenticeship scheme.

Since graduating in 2002, Alex has concentrated on chamber music and is a founder member of the Scottish Clarinet Quartet and Éisd. Both groups have a strong focus on contemporary music, and Alex has played a key role in gaining funding for commissions, as well as in giving the first performances of over a dozen new works in concerts and festivals across the UK.

Composers he has worked with include Stephen Davismoon, Sadie Harrison, David Fennessy, Anna Meredith and Matthew Rogers. Current recording projects are Songs of the Earth with the Scottish Clarinet Quartet, and The Time Machine, with Éisd.

Alex’s other interests include the history of ideas and hill-walking.
