The Research Ensemble - Kate Openshaw

Kate Openshaw left her home town of Belfast to study Percussion in Glasgow at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating with First Class Honours in 2001. While there she won several awards and competitions, including the Governors Prize Recital and the John Knox Memorial award.

After gaining a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, she completed a Postgraduate Performance Diploma, won the James Blades Award for Timpani and returned to Glasgow to continue her career.

As a busy freelance musician she works with all the Orchestras in Scotland and several in the UK, as well as a regular position as Timpanist with Camerata Ireland. She has also been lucky enough to play with several Pop and Rock artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, the Beach Boys and Rod Stewart.

As a chamber musician she is one half of a saxophone and percussion duo, Soluna, with Carole Sutherland and has just finished a short tour of recitals and education concerts.
