The Research Ensemble - Richard Craig

Richard was born in Glasgow and studied flute at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Richard Blake. Supported by the Scottish International Educational Trust and a recipient of a Dewar Arts award, he continued his studies, specialising in Contemporary interpretation at the C.N.R Strasbourg with Mario Caroli and Claire Gentilhomme.

A laureate of international competitions, he is first and foremost a musician in the field of contemporary music and his profound affinity with new music has led to him to work with composers such as James Dillon, Ivan Fedele, Kaija Saariaho, Helmut Lachenmann, Salvatore Sciarrino and work with members of Ensemble Modern, BBCSSO and Scottish Opera. His prizes include a Grand Prix and a Primo Speciale (for his performance of works by Sciarrino) from the XIth and XIIth L’Accademia Concordia Concorso Internazionale di Interpretazione di Musica Contemporanea, Italy and ‘prix du jury’ from the XIth Penderecki international chamber music competition, Poland.

In 2005 he gave his London debut under the auspices of the Park Lane Group which was received to critical acclaim: “Richard Craig is a brilliant flautist.” (The Times) “virtuosity at its most beguiling” (The Guardian).
